Write&Cite ZoExt
Save a web page or paper to your Zotero library, to a group, or to one specific collection, from your browser alone. The Zotero app is not needed.
Choosing a group or collection without the app
Without the Zotero app running, the official connector can only save to your main web library. ZoExt talks to the Zotero Web API with your own key instead, so any library, group or collection that key can write to is a destination.
Straight to your web library
Saves go to your Zotero account over the Zotero Web API. Nothing needs to be installed or left running on your computer.
Groups included
Any group library your key can write to is a valid destination, so a class or lab library is one click away.

Make a collection on the spot
Need somewhere new for a source? Create a collection, or a subcollection inside another one, in any library or group you can write to. It becomes your destination straight away.
Start a group in one click
Zotero only lets groups be created on zotero.org, so New group opens Zotero’s own form. Once it exists, the group shows up in the Save to list.
Reads what publishers embed
Titles, authors, journals and DOIs come from the metadata a page already publishes for search engines, then a DOI is checked against Crossref.
Duplicate warning
If the same DOI or URL is already in the chosen library, you are told before you save it a second time.
App mode, if you use it
Prefer the Zotero desktop app? Flip the Web / App switch in the popup and save there instead. No key is needed in that mode.
From a page to a reference in four steps

Create a Zotero API key
Follow the Write&Cite setup guide, or go straight to zotero.org/settings/keys/new. Enable Allow library access and Allow write access. To save into groups, set Default Group Permissions to Read/Write.

Paste the key into ZoExt
Open the extension’s settings from the gear in its popup and paste the key. ZoExt checks it, shows which account it belongs to, and reports whether it can see any groups.

Click the icon on any page
Check the title, add tags if you like, and choose where it should go, or create a new collection right there in the list. If a page cannot be read, such as a PDF viewer, paste a DOI, arXiv ID or ISBN instead. Selecting a DOI on the page before you click does the same.

Save
The save runs in the background, so closing the popup mid-save does not lose it. A dropped connection cannot create a duplicate either.
